Welcome To St Mary's

For almost a thousand years St Marys Church has played its part at the centre of the village of Bampton in Oxfordshire, and today it continues to be a vibrant influence within our local community as well as a beautiful centrepiece to the village.

The future of the Church and its community depends on local support and hard work from a committed group of volunteers who ensure that St Marys remains a special place at the heart of our community.

New Church Electoral Roll
In 2019 a new Church Electoral Roll has to be prepared by the Parish. This is done every six years and in the intervening years it is updated locally by each church. There is a specific timetable for the preparation of the Roll to ensure that it is completed and in place for the Annual Parochial Church Meeting which will take place at the Carter Institute in Clanfield on 26 March 2019.

Forms for completion, to be included in the Electoral Roll, are available at the back of the church and they should then be placed in the box marked: ‘Completed Electoral Roll forms’ by 4th March 2019 at the latest. If you have any queries please contact either of the Churchwardens Roger Preston and Douglas Clare, or the Electoral Roll Officer Nicola Saward on 01993 852171

Music in Country Churches
Those of you who enjoyed the Music in Country Churches concert at St Mary’s in May last year will be pleased that the event was judged a success by the MICC team. From the money raised for this worthy cause, namely the restoration of country churches, we were allocated to cover our costs £3,500 which enabled us to allocate a sizeable sum to our partners at St James’ church at Aston, who assisted us in managing the event.

We meet every Monday in Bampton Coffee House between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. for company, a friendly chat & fellowship. We buy ourselves a drink of our choice and find a seat. All are welcomed as we introduce ourselves to newcomers. Some come regularly week by week, others just pay an occasional visit when it is convenient. It is all very informal!

About Visiting St Mary's Bampton

St Mary's Church is pleased to welcome visitors throughout the year, either to services, just to have a look round, or to use the church as a place of peace and reflection. The church is normally open during daylight hours all year round.

We have recently seen an increase in visitors due to the filming of the ITV drama series Downton Abbey which was filmed in and around the church. Watch extra footage about the Downton weddings filmed in St Marys by clicking here. Filming has also recently taken place in preparation for the forthcoming feature film, so more visitors can be expected in the coming months and years.

The roads around St Mary's are narrow and access is difficult for large vehicles. There is limited parking on Church Close on the north side of the churchyard, but all coaches should drop off/pick up in the Market Square and can park easily at the Recreation Ground on Buckland Road (OX18 2AA). Further details about how to get to Bampton can be found on the Bampton Parish Council Website.

For large groups refreshments can sometimes be made available by prior arrangement.

Please click here to send an email to the Churchwardens
for further details about visiting.
